A few weeks ago John Stark named Jim O'Rourke it's new head varsity football coach. O'Rourke looks to turnaround a Generals football program which has struggled in recent years.
Helping is the fact that Stark will no longer be playing in Division-III, and thus avoiding teams like Souhegan. But if you ask Coach O'Rourke that is hardly an advantage.
"We just moved to Division IV, home of Plymouth (as did 10-0 Trinity)," O'Rourke explained. "No easy games."
In fact, in my article a couple weeks back with my Preliminary Power Rankings I talked about there will be 4 VERY tough teams in D-IV in 2010 with Plymouth, Trinity, Laconia and Hanover.
It won't be easy for the Generals, especially considering they don't have any returning all-state players.
"The Stark program has been down and it is a great challenge, but Henniker and Weare have a lot of good kids and families" Coach O'Rourke went on. "If we can get things pointed in the right direction and become competitive, the fun stuff, such as individual and team power rankings will come."
What is O'Rourke's background you ask? According to him, "I used to coach in upstate NY, and have done some scouting at the high school level."
Good luck to Coach O'Rourke. This year might be tough with the depth of talent in D-IV. But watch out for John Stark football to make some noise in the coming years.
