EBPS Game Recap - Girls 2014 Game
This past Sunday at the Eastern Sports Center in Plaistow, NH the very best girls and boys high school basketball players in NH gathered for the Eastern Basketball Preseason Showcase. The event featured 8 games.
In the coming days I will have recaps, player evaluations and player rankings will be updated for all 8 games. Next up is the Girls 2014 Game.
This was a very fun game to watch. 2 good, highly skilled, well disciplined teams going at it. This class definitely has a lot of talent. Many of the players in this game played for the NE Crusader Black AAU team that finished 3rd place in nationals.
The game was played at a fast pace and also at a high level. The Black team might have had the best player in the class in Aliza Simpson (Londonderry), but the White Team had the #2, #3 and #4 ranked players and they won this game 52-41 in a contest that was close throughout. Ali Glennon (Bedford), McKenzie Brown (Bedford) and Jamie Sherburne (Bishop Guertin) led the White Team to the victory.
While the top 4 ranked players in this class all solidified their rankings on this afternoon, it is obvious that this class has a lot of depth in talent. No player in this game scored over 10 points. It was a hard fought game where every shot was uncontested. All of these girls have a bright future in high school basketball ahead of them.
Before I get to the player evaluations - there was a very nice, warm moment that happened before this game. The players all wore pink socks and made a sign (pictured above) in support of Rebecca Collins, the mother of Rachel Collins (played for the White Team) and wife of Michael Collins (coached the Black Team). Mrs. Collins was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a nice gesture by the girls to all come together and give their support. Best of luck to Rebecca!
Game's Standout Players
Aliza Simpson, Londonderry HS – Simpson showed once again why she is the #1 ranked freshman in New Hampshire. She was effective running the point for the Black team, setting up her teammates but also taking it hard to the rim and sticking jumpers off the dribble. What was most impressive about Simpson was that she was even better defensively than she was on offense.
Ali Glennon, Bedford HS – Glennon continues to show that she is an extremely difficult match up, as a 5’10” player who has the ability to take people off the dribble. She has the size of a forward, but she can shoot, pass, defend and handle the ball like a guard. Glennon made some strong drives to the basket in this game, including one where she set up a teammate with a nice dish.
McKenzie Brown, Bedford HS – Brown had 10 points and 8 rebounds to help lead the White Team to the win. Brown has tremendous upside due to her size and skill set. She’s already 6’1” and has good foot work and a soft shooting touch around the basket.
Jamie Sherburne, Bishop Guertin HS – Sherburne can play the 1 or the 2, and in this game she once again played with a ton of energy. She is a very quick, athletic player who was able to shoot, pass and handle the ball as well as anyone. Sherburne also showed a lethal spin move in transition as well as knocking down shots from the outside.
Other Stock Risers
Clairee Putnam (Windham) very quick guard who played hard and showed a nice handle.
Rachel Collins (Bedford) impressed with a nice floater in the lane and an even better finish at the rim with her left hand against a defender.
Gigi Piercy (Bishop Guertin) solid guard who pushed the ball and made good decisions on the break.
Kayla Stacy (Manchester Memorial) tough, scrappy player who dove on the floor for loose balls and did all of the little things well.
Brenna Walczak (Oyster River) lots of upside for the 6’0” Walczak who has a wide body and rebounded the basketball effectively.
Sandi Purcell (Alvirne) lightning quick guard who shot it well and hit the open man.
Bailey Marshall (Bedford) wing player who hustled and made plays all game long.
Morgan Church (Kearsarge) two guard who played hard on both ends and defended as well as anybody.
Ashley Hugh (Pinkerton) tough player who made a nice move in open floor by putting the ball behind her back to avoid defender.
Phoebe Collins (Portsmouth) shot it well from deep showed a good basketball IQ.
Mary Mullen (Merrimack Valley) 5'10" forward displayed good strength and toughness around the basket.
Samantha Gauthier (Manchester Central) Gauthier is a natural athlete, with good agility and quickness which gives her a lot of potential.
Dominique St. Pierre (Portsmouth) rebounded the ball nicely for a guard and also ran the floor well.
Taylor Cuomo (Pinkerton) played tough defense and showed good range on jump shot.
Heather King (Lebanon) finished at the basket with a nice hook shot.
