Basketball Coaching Carousel
(Last updated 12/31/10)
Over the course of the off-season there were many coaching changes, hires and rumors swirling around. It was a VERY busy time aboard the NH basketball coaching carousel. So I figured it would be a good idea to organize things a little and have all the information in one place.
This post contains a comprehensive directory of the basketball coaching changes in NH. Both girls and boys teams are listed. If I'm forgetting anyone let me know and I'll update the post.
Kevin Bonney is taking the year off from coaching at Alvirne. This season the Broncos will be coached by Seth Garon, who has been the team's assistant for the last 7 years.
The only coach Bedford basketball has had in its still very young history has moved to Portugal to accept a teaching position. Replacing Joe Kegler is Jon Langlois. Langlois coached Somersworth to a Class M state title in 2005.
Mark Yeaton takes over for former coach Rich Penney. Yeaton is a Bishop Brady alum. He played on the dominant Bishop Brady teams from a few years back with Billy Collins and Danny Rasanen. He played at UNH before finishing his college career at SNHU. Yeaton has coached as an assistant at Pembroke and most recently as an assistant at NHTI. He has also done some work with BST Basketball. Penney's son Tyler was a player for Bishop Brady, but he graduated in the spring and is now at the University of Southern Maine.
Chris Gaudreau tried to obtain the vacant coaching job at Manchester West. He didn't get it, and Bow replaced him with new coach Dave Michaud. This is Michaud's 1st year as Bow's coach, but he is the former basketball coach at Goffstown High. Michaud is also the father of Bow senior guard Erik Michaud.
Tom Bourdeau takes over as the new coach at Farmington. Bourdeau is the former assistant coach at Prospect Mountain High.
Bill Johnston, alum of KHS and KSC takes over the Blackbirds program. He replaces Joe Giovannangeli, whose contract was not renewed by the school at the end of last season. This is Johnston's first varsity head coaching position.
Last year Jim Zorbas took the year off as coach of the Lancers basketball program. His assistant, Jeff Gustavson was the interim head coach last year. But the "interim" has now been removed from his title, and Gustavson is now the team's official head coach.
Dan Bryson replaces Sam Carey as the coach of the Blue Knights. Carey spent just 2 years at the helm for West, but he did a great job with the team, leading them to the quarterfinals both years. He decided to leave the position to spend more time with his family. Bryson was the JV coach at West. At first West hired former Bow coach Chris Gaudreau for the job and gave him the keys to the gym. But the hire wasn't approved by the school board, and Bryson got the position.
Steve Lavolpicelo has been hired as the Tiger's newest head coach.
Matt Regan takes over for previous coach Todd Kress. Regan was previously the school's JV coach. Kress is now the Pelham High A.D.
EJ Perry, who had previously led the Blue Devils to back-to-back Class L titles in 2007 and 2008 resigned over the summer. He was replaced by the school's long time JV coach Rob McLaughlin.
Scott MacNamee replaces the team's previous coach, Bill McIver. Mcnamee has been the Lebanon boys reserve coach for the past couple of years. He also played for Lebanon when he was in high school.
Steve Tracy is in his 1st year as coach of the Alvirne girls program. He replaces Karen Bonney, who is the school's athletic director.
Bishop Brady has hired Tricia Connelly to be its new girls basketball coach.
Bill Vermette is the new coach of the Bow girls.
Con-Val has hired Kevin Ritter to be its new girls basketball coach. He comes from Monadnock and Keene State.
According to Merrimack A.D. Andrew Krahling, Amy Larkin-Perez was hired in June to be the next girls basketball coach at Merrimack. Larkin-Perez has previously spent 4 years as the assistant coach for the school's boys varsity team. She replaces previous coach Kindyll Dorsey, who coached the Tomahawks for 2 years.
Steve Signor is the new coach at Milford. He replaces Coach Ed Palladino. Signor has recently been coaching on the AAU circuit, with the Granite State Rockettes program.
New coach is Brian Allard, who is the former JV coach at Mascoma.
Kyle Tave was hired as the new coach of the Pelham girls basketball team.
Of all the basketball teams with new head coaches, the Souhegan girls are definitely the one with the best shot at a title. New coach Jeremy Faulkner (pictured above) is no stranger to championships, as he was the assistant coach for the NE Shooting Stars 15U team that won the Division II AAU National Championship over the summer. Two of the players on that Shooting Stars team will also be playing for Coach Faulkner at Souhegan - Jane White and Ceara McNamara.
Karen Malsbenden was hired over the summer to take over the Red Red Raiders girls program.
Windham is a 1st year varsity program this season, and their 1st year head coach is Joe Mason. Mason is also a coach for the NE Crusaders girls AAU program.
