Depth Prevails as Goffstown Boys Defeat Kearsarge

Here's a stat for you hoop fans. This afternoon in Goffstown, the Goffstown High boys basketball team got 50 points...FROM THEIR BENCH. For a team to get that many points off their bench is a staggering statistic. These guys are as deep as any team in in the state. They went with an 11 player rotation - 10 of them scored. It also doesn't hurt when 8 of those players are seniors.

"We have 2 different groups of 5" explained Goffstown head coach Justin Gorham. "Then we sub them in and out every 4 minutes. Each game the group that starts might be different. I don't really have starters and reserves, I just 10 or 11 kids that I play and I have 2 groups that rotate in and out."

The Grizzlies top 3 scorers all came off the bench (or they just happened to be in the second group today) as Jake Mount had 16, Alex Wageling had 15 and Ryan Lange had 11. Goffstown, who is a D-II team that moved down from Class L (D-I) before the season defeated Kearsarge Regional 77-68. It was the 10th time in 12 games this year that Goffstown scored 70 points or more.

Video highlights and a post-game interview with 4 Goffstown players will be posted shortly.

Depth Was the Difference
Kearsarge was hanging right in there with Goffstown in this game. They even had a small lead on multiple occasions in the 1st half. They jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the 1st quarter behind the strong play of Jake Broom (15 points) and Doug Gregory (20 points). Sam Clevesy also played well for Kearsarge, especially on the boards. He is a lefty, and Goffstown kept letting him drive and finish with his left hand. Clevesy ended up with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

"I though Gregory had a really good game for us" said Kearsarge head coach Nate Camp. "He was a very good on defense as well. Our kids played hard. Clevesy is another great player and a hard worker. At any given time he has the potential to be the best player on the floor."

Kearsarge played well in the 1st half, but in the 2nd half it was all Goffstown. Reese Easton drained a three which broke a 45-45 tie in the 3rd quarter and gave the Grizzlies a 48-45 lead. That shot really seemed to swing the momentum back to Goffstown, especially since it came right after Clevesy made a nice rebound and put-back for Kearsarge. Gregory hit a 15 footer from the right side to cut the Grizzlie's lead to just 1. But then Wageling and Mount hit back to back threes to make it 56-49. Then they came up with a stealm and Brandon Shea finished it with a layup on the other end to make it a 61-52 Goffstown lead after 3 quarters. Kearsarge had problems with Goffstown's pressure defense and had 19 turnovers, most of which came in the 2nd half.

Depth was the difference, though. Goffstown had an 11 player rotation. They were sending in 4 or 5 new players every 4 minutes. Kearsarge meanwhile played their starters big minutes, they had a 7 player rotation with an 8th player who played about 3 minutes. In the 4th quarter the Grizzlies kept their momentum going, pushing the lead to as many as 16, and with 4 minutes left in the game it was 74-58 Goffstown.

Wageling, Mount, Lange, Connor Shaw (10 points) all scored in double figures, and Shea chipped in with 8. Cody Spear also did a nice job on the boards, finishing with 5 points and 9 rebounds.
