Green Wins Player of the Year, Commits to Phillips Exeter

What a week for Bishop Guertin's Connor Green. He scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead BG to a spot in the Division I state title game. And now he has also committed to attend and play basketball next season at Phillips Exeter Academy for a post-grad year. Not only that, but Green has also been announced as the 2010-2011 Gatorade boys basketball Player of the Year for NH.

Green Headed to Phillips Exeter
As far as academic schools go, it doesn't get much better than Phillips Exeter Academy, not only for New England but for the entire country. 1 year there will really do wonders in preparing him for college. Phillips Exeter also competes in the NEPSAC, which is is the most competitive prep school league in the nation.

He will play on a talented team next year, one that includes Manchester native and point guard Showly Nicholson. It is a step up both academically and basketball-wise, and it will really prepare him well for college in both areas.

Green will also now get to play another year of AAU, which will only make him better and get him more exposure to colleges. You can't go wrong going to Phillips Exeter. It's a VERY hard school to get into. Congrats to Connor and best of luck.

Here is the press release announcing Green as the Gatorade POY:

BISHOP GUERTIN HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUT NAMED GATORADE® NEW HAMPSHIRE BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
CHICAGO (March 17, 2011) — In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Connor Green of Bishop Guertin High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade New Hampshire Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Green is the first Gatorade New Hampshire Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Bishop Guertin High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Green as New Hampshire’s best high school boys basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Green joins an elite alumni association of past state boys basketball award winners, including Dwight Howard (2003-04, SW Atlanta Christian Academy, Ga.), Chauncey Billups (1993-94 & 1994-95, George Washington HS, Colo.), Jason Kidd (1991-92, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS, Calif.), Paul Pierce (1994-95, Inglewood HS, Calif.) and Chris Bosh (2001-02, Lincoln HS, Texas).

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior forward has led the Cardinals to a 19-2 record and a berth in the Division I state final against Trinity High, scheduled for March 19. Green is averaging 20.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 77 percent from the free throw line. A 2011 New Hampshire Mr. Basketball finalist, he has recorded a double-double in 20 of Bishop Guertin’s 21 games this season.
Green has maintained a 3.30 GPA in the classroom. He has volunteered locally as a peer tutor and on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church youth group.

“Connor Green has developed into a complete player,” said Bishop Guertin High Head Coach Jim Migneault. “Each game he is just as focused on grabbing rebounds as he is about scoring points. He has matured so much as a player this season.”

Green intends to complete a year of post-graduate study, beginning this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Green joins recent Gatorade New Hampshire Boys Basketball Players of the Year Melvin Ejim (2009-10, Brewster), Alex Oriakhi (2008-09, Tilton), and Emmanuel Negedu (2007-08, Brewster), among the state’s list of former award winners.
