The Bishop Guertin football team has won three straight Division II championships, and 6 titles in the last 7 years. Tony Johnson coached the Cardinals to all of those championships, but over the off-season he stepped down and was then hired former Manchester West coach Travis Cote to be his replacement. Johnson is still the school's Athletic Director, and has since taken an assistant coaching position with the St. Anselm's football team.
With Cote at the helm, the BG football team is gearing up for another run at a D-II title. They will have to replace a number of strong senior players, including Mike Kelly and Steve Cuipa. They also had a handful of players transfer out of the program over the off-season, including junior Andrew Crane, who started on both lines as a sophomore (now at Lawrence Academy).
The Cardinals are getting ready for their week 1 game on Saturday night vs. defending Division I champs Pinkerton, followed by their Division II schedule. On Tuesday after practice they took some time out to speak with the NH Notebook about the upcoming season. Here's what they had to say.
