Donovan Leads Lakers to Win
Division 6 is turning into a three team race but the road to the championship will have to go through the Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough Lakers. The Gilford Eagles found out that playing on the beautifully groomed astroturf field in the rain is no easy task. The Eagles were beaten Saturday 34-8 by a Laker team who displayed a dominating performance in every phase of the game.
Gilford did have a couple highlights on the day. The first was they won the coin toss. Interlakes Connor Donovan sent the opening kick-off booming into the end zone. The Eagles with the state's leading rusher Brendon Murphy start with the ball on their 20. First play Murphy is tackled for a 3 yard loss as the swarming Laker 4-4 defense gave Murphy absolutely no room to run. Three plays and out, Gilford has to punt the ball away.
Interlakes starts on the 30 come out in I formation with Connor Donovan lined up at tailback it takes 6 plays and a 3 yard run by QB Mitchell Juries to put the Lakers up 6-0. The Lakers miss the extra point that was the only mistake that kicker and most versatile player in the state Connor Donovan makes the whole game!
Gilford gets the ball on it's second possession on the 20. Another Donovan kick into the end zone. Gilford already senses that they need to do something special, they put Murphy in motion to the right as a decoy and QB Jack Athanas completes a 43 yard seam pass. Gilford couldn't do much after and punted the ball down to the Interlake 1 yard line.
Interlakes starts on their 1 and goes on a 17 play drive ending with a 10 yard halfback option pass from Conner Donovan to Hunter Jensen. The Lakers Conner Donovan kicks the extra point. Lakers up 13-0.
Interlakes has a large offensive line lead by senior captains Conor Langille and Hayden Juries. Coach Paul Lavigne who has 30 years of experience coaching at the high school and college level has his kids running a 1970's I formation style running game put he also mixes in an assortment of screen passes that are executed to perfection. QB Mitchell Juries throws a perfectly timed screen pass to Tanner Quinney who turns into a Patroit like tight end touchdown pass and run. Interlakes 20- Gilford 0 at the half.
Interlakes dominates the third quarter with a mix of Donovan and running back William True handling most of the ball carrying. Donovan scores on a 2 yard run putting the lakers up 27-0 after 3. True who is a junior is a nice change of pace running back. Donovan is a north a south John Riggins style running back. True is smaller with some shake and bake to his game. He is effective running counters and sweeps. He finished the day with 9 carries and 46 yards.Thd second stringers finish the game in the 4th quarter with a final score of 34-8.
Gilford's Brendon Murphy (the state's leading rusher) is a top notch D6 running back. He finally got it going in the second half. Murphy, who has a little wiggle and a burst when he gets to the edges finished with 80 yards rushing.
The New Hampshire Player of the Year candidates are currently being passed around. The winner probably will come from a D1 program which probably makes sense. Let me throw a name out there that deserves some ink. Number 35 Connor Donovan is as versatile high school football player that I have every seen. In today's game he was the kicker, punter, tailback, and middle linebacker for the Lakers. He rushed 26 carries for 173 yards and one touchdown. He threw one pass for a 10 yard touchdown. He played middle linebacker and helped keep the states leading rushers to 0 yards rushing in the 1st half. He made for 4 out of 5 extra points, he kicked 4 out 6 kick offs into the in zone in the air in the rain, and he had one punt with a water logged ball go 66 yards most of it in the air! Paul Hornung comes to mind in describing this young man's game. In today's world of spoiled over priced athletes Conner is worth the price of admission. What the heck, everyone should know this young man's name!
D6 is simple - Franklin or Epping/-Newmarket, if you can go to Meredith and beat the Lakers you have earned it! My bet is on the Lakers!
