Portsmouth and Bedford both went 6-2 in Division III play this season, and were both 8-3 overall going into Saturday afternoon's championship game. Just 3 weeks ago in the first meeting between these 2 teams Bedford went on the road to Portsmouth and won 24-12. So the Bulldogs had to be the favorites in this game...right? Wrong.
With 7:00 left in the 1st half this was a scoreless football game. But from that point on it was complete domination by the Portsmouth Clippers. Billy Lane ran for 127 yards, 3 touchdowns and he also intercepted a pass on defense. The Portsmouth defense played AMAZING in this game, as they sacked Bedford QB James Caparell 8 times, they didn't allow the Bedford offense to get inside the 30 yard line the entire 1st half and they limited RB Jordan Garron to just 8 yards on 9 carries. The entire defense was great for Portsmouth, especially Lane, Ricky Holt, Connor McCauley, Sean Miller, Kurtis Leonard, Jack Mackey, Matt Feeney, Evan Pugliese, Anthony Kurylak and Dan Kaczmarek.
The Clippers scored 17 points in the span of 3 minutes in the 2nd quarter, they led 20-0 at halftime (kicker Charlie Duprey had field goals of 38 and 34 yards) and there was running time for the last 8:35 of the 4th quarter. They were the runners-up in D-III for each of the past 3 years, but they defeated Bedford 41-6 for the 2011 championship in front of a PACKED house at Bedford High. It's been a crazy year in D-III, but now that it's all been said and done there is N question who the division's best team is - it's the Portmsouth Clippers. Congrats to Coach Murphy, his staff and their players.
