It was the 5th holiday basketball tournament for me in the last 5 days - what a week! The Nashua North Holiday Basketball tournament features a bunch of Division I teams, but it was a pair of young D-II squads who met in the final. Bedford and Windham are 2 of the newest schools in the state but they both have very good girls basketball programs and both are expected to compete for a state title this season.
In a game that was very low scoring due to some terrific defense on both sides, Windham won the game and the tournament title by defeating Bedford 37-33. Sophomore guard Clairee Putnam (11 points) drilled a clutch three-pointer late in the game that put the Jaguars up. Kerry White posted 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Kelsey Schiebel and Bernadette Connors also played well for Windham.
Both teams really pressured the basketball well - nobody was getting any easy looks at the basket. Bedford was playing without one of their best players in 6'1" sophomore McKenzie Brown, and Ali Glennon sat for much of the game with foul trouble. Haley Driscoll (10 points and 11 rebounds) really stepped up for the Bulldogs, while Bailey Marshall, Caroline Conrad, Maggie McGown, Rachel Allen and Rachel Collins all played well for a deep Bedford team in the loss.
