They trailed by as many as 16 points, and they were down by 13 at halftime. But the Newmarket High boys basketball team was able to turn it around, pulling out a great comeback win over Epping 56-51 in a packed gym on Thursday night in Newmarket.
Epping played some great basketball in the 2nd quarter, going on a 28-6 run behind the strong play of the Stanley brothers (Jimmy and Frank) and point guard Brandon Carleton. But Newmarket then made a run of their own, closing to within 4 points at 40-36 heading into the 4th quarter. The teams traded leads a few times in the 4th, but Newmarket made more plays down the stretch to come away with the win. The Mules were led by Christian Filion (17 points), Josh Eisfeller (15 points) and Christian Hawkins (12 points) and also got strong play from Peter Carlson, Sean Fleming and Robert McGloughlin.
These 2 schools combine with each other as one team during football season, but when it's basketball season it's a BIG rivalry. Both teams are contenders in Division IV, but Newmarket has more experience playing in big games and that was definitely a factor in this game.
