Typically when a 16-1 team plays a 14-3 team you can expect a close, hard fought game from start to finish. Well, Wednesday night's boys basketball game between Conant and Hopkinton was not typical.
Conant went on an 11-0 run in the 1st quarter to take an 13-1 lead. From there they just kept on playing suffocating defense and running and hitting jumpers and layups on offense. Hopkinton only scored 3 points in the entire 1st quarter and they didn't get their first field goal until there was 4:17 left in the 2nd quarter. And the Orioles cruised to a 64-31 win on senior night, ending the regular season on an 11 game winning streak.
Conant was just too fast and too skilled for Hopkinton to handle. The Hawks really struggled offensively. Conant wouldn't let them get any good looks and the looks they were getting weren't falling. Conant got a balanced scoring effort, as 10 different players scored and no one scored more than 10 points (Devin Springfield and Nick Panagiotes both had 10).
"I challenged them to re-commit to defense" said Conant head coach Eric Saucier. "They bought into it, and our last 3 practices were really good."
The top 4 seeds in the Division III playoffs are now set. It is #1 Berlin, #2 Conant, #3 Campbell and #4 Hopkinton. Somersworth is the #5 seed and I would not be at all surprised if they went on the road and knocked off Hopkinton in the quarterfinals. Berlin and Conant both end the season 17-1, and they are clearly the favorites to make it to the title game.
