Merrimack Ends Spaulding's Dream Season in Semis

Of the 4 teams who made it to UNH for the 2012 Division I Final Four Spaulding was definitely the underdog. Not only does everyone like to root for the underdog, but it is also hard to not root for the Red Raiders considering what they have been through over the last week. Not 1 but 2 bank-shot 3-pointers by Luke Roberts sent them to UNH for the semi-finals, plus the team survived a very scary bus crash.

After their quarterfinal win over Nashua North the Spaulding players and fans were starting to think they were the team of destiny. But it was not meant to be, as Dimitri Floras and Merrimack ended the Red Raider's dream season with a 53-39 win on Tuesday night to advance to the championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Spaulding beat Merrimack during the regular season, but Floras missed that game with a wrist injury. He played in this game and scored a game-high 21 points to go along with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and only 1 turnover. Senior forward Jeff Giannelli had 10 points off the bench, including a big shot late in the 3rd quarter to put the Tomahawks up 43-34 heading to the 4th. Eric Gendron, Tyler Gendron and Jared Peabody also played well for Merrimack, who moved the ball well on offense (only 6 turnovers all game) and played great defense in the 2nd half. Spaulding junior forward Dominic Paradis had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
