Dimitri Floras scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the 2nd half, and the Merrimack High boys basketball team defeated Manchester Central 65-56 on Saturday to capture the 2012 Division I state title. Floras hit a couple of clutch threes in the 4th quarter, with the second one putting the Tomahawks up 53-42 with 4:21 left to play. Merrimack is a tough team to come back from because they take care of the basketball so well, and they held on for the win.
In addition to getting a big game from Floras the Gendron brothers Tyler and Eric as well as senior big man Jeff Giannelli also had big games for Merrimack. Eric Gendron (only a sophomore) had 16 points, Tyler Gendron (10 points) had a slam dunk late in the game that clinched the championship and Giannelli also had some clutch baskets, as he scored all 10 of his points in the 2nd half.
Central was coming off a thrilling double-OT win over Queen City rival Trinity in the semi-finals but still put up a valiant effort. They went on a 9-0 run early in the 1st quarter but then Merrimack took the lead and kept it for the rest of the game. The Little Green were led by senior guard Gabe LaCount and junior wing Troy Pelletier who both had 15 points, while forward Christian Artiga chipped in with 10.
