Winning back-to-back championships is no easy feat, but that is exactly what the Souhegan girls basketball team has done. In last year's championship game they had to come back from an 18-4 deficit to beat Lebanon in the finals as Jane White hit a half court shot at the buzzer at the end of the 1st half and the game-winning 3-pointer with under a minute left in the 4th quarter. This year's title game didn't have nearly as much drama, as Souhegan cruised to a 53-27 win on Friday night.
Kearsarge was playing without star sophomore point guard Morgan Church, who tore her ACL with in the final minutes of the Cougar's semi-final win over Windham. With Church out, and with Souhegan playing some inspired defense Kearsarge struggled offensively all game. Here's a stat you don't see everyday - Kearsarge scored 27 points, and they had 27 turnovers. With that being said, it would have bee a different game if Church was in there, and nobody expected the Cougars to make it this far so they had a great season.
It was truly a team effort for Souhegan. White didn't have her best game offensively but she kept her poise out there and played tough defense. Stepping up for the Sabers was sophomore wing Mickenzie Larrivee, who scored a game-high 16 points and was on fire in the 2nd quarter. Ashley Tighe assisted on 3 of her baskets in the 2nd quarter, and after a a 3-pointer by Ceara McNamara Souhegan went up 23-8 and never looked back. Tori Forrest (recently committed to play basketball at Rhode Island College) dominated the boards finishing with 12 rebounds to go with 9 points and 2 blocks.
White has now led Souhegan to back-to-back state titles, she's scored over 1,000 career points, she's made first team all-state, she has a scholarship to play at Bentley. The only thing she hasn't done is in D-II Player of the Year, and when the award is announced next weekend she should win that in a landslide. Meanwhile head coach Jeremy Faulkner has won 2 titles in his first 2 years at Souhegan. One correction - in the video I said Souhegan had 5 losses in the regular season but they actually had 4.
