After five years as the head coach of the Keene girls basketball team Eric Matte is moving on.
“I have stepped down from coaching at Keene High” said Matte. “After an agonizing decision, it's time for me to focus on my profession, my family, and my son.”
Matte led the Blackbirds to a 10-10 record in 2011-2012, as they advanced to the Division I quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Bishop Guertin. In 2010 his squad made it to the D-I semi-finals and he was named Class L Coach of the Year. In his five years at Keene, Matte coached two different 1,000 point scorers in Cammie Warner (now playing at Quinnipiac) and Ashley Clough (committed to RPI).
Prior to coaching at Keene High, Matte served as an assistant coach for the Keene State College women’s basketball team. He is also the younger (but taller) brother of Lebanon High boys basketball coach Keith Matte.
Meanwhile, the Keene boys basketball team has had four coaches in the last four years, after previous coach Bill Johnston was fired halfway through this past season and replaced with assistant Kent Drake-Deese.
