Anderson Commits to Allegheny

St. Thomas High senior Gretchen Anderson has committed to play basketball for Allegheny College in Meadville, PA where she received an academic scholarship and plans to major in Biochemistry. The honor roll student has played varsity basketball since her freshman year, was a 2011-2012 co-captain, received several state and local awards and recognized by her teammates with the 2011-2012 Leadership Award.

Gretchen has played club basketball with the New England Crusaders since 2007. Allegheny is part of the competitive Great Lakes North Coast Athletic Conference, playing perennial top twenty teams from Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, including DePaul, Mount Union and Washington – Jefferson.

“Gretchen Anderson was a pleasure to coach” said Kara Leary, who was Anderson’s coach with the Crusaders. “She came to us as a 5’9+ tweener who had spent most of her youth basketball career on the interior. She really put the work in on her handle, shot and perimeter game to man the perimeter spot on the club side. A player/coach is what Gretchen is (she has coached club ball locally in the seacoast NH area while juggling her own busy academic and athletic high school schedule). Gretchen was really a coach on the floor for us and played whatever role we needed her to play; whether it was defending bigger kids, getting the lunch pail rebounds, or leading the offense from her big wing position. Gretchen is just one of those kids who is special to coach.”
