Cougar Speed Too Much for Giants!

By: DC
We are all most to the halfway point of the season and we are starting to separate the pretenders from the contenders. Friday night in Concord there was a match up of 2 familiar Division 5 foes who have dropped down into D6 for the 2012 season. Campbell Cougars everyone's preseason favorite proved that they are indeed the team to beat with a total dismantling of the Brady Giants 49-7.

Coach Prindiville of the Cougars knows it is still early in the season said "my team is very young and we start only 5 seniors we still have a lot more football to learn".

That is bad news for the rest of the division because this team is just starting to figure things out and is only going to get better. Prindiville also knows he has the best player in the division and he is only a junior. #25 Jesiah Wade had a monster game last night scoring 6 touchdowns with a display of moves and speed that you just don't see at the division 6 level. This kid would start for any team in any division in the state.

Brady was playing without 4 starters lost to injuries and suspensions carried over from last week's win over Mascoma. Brady's defense was definitely fired up for the challenge of stopping Wade and the explosive Cougar offense. Wade's first 3 carries of the game netted 0 yards and Brady held Campbell's offense in check their first drive of the night. The problem for Brady was offense who played awesome last week couldn't drive the football like they did against Mascoma. Their first 2 drives netted 1 first down and they were forced into punting the play back to Campbell.

The key to beating Campbell is to drive the football and keep the ball out of the hands of #25. After 3 straight no gains on his 4th carry lightning strikes quickly. With Campbell at their own 48 Wade finally found a crack in the Brady line and he is into the secondary with a room to run he does a very athletic 360 spin move on a Brady defender and he is off to the end zone with his first of 6 touchdowns, 52 yards Campbell is up 7-0. The very next Brady possession on 1st down from their 26 the play that left the barn door open. Brady quarterback #11 Brendan Johnson who returned from a week one injury through a pass over the middle but #80 Vincent Bucci cut in front of the receiver intercepted the pass and returned it all the way to the 1! One play latter Wade is in the end zone the Cougars are up 14-0 and that early Brady fire has disappeared!

Brady unable to move the football against the very good and underrated Campbell defense is forced to return the ball to Campbell. Two plays latter the Cougar quarterback #14 junior Christian McKenna hits #21 Max Gouveia in stride with a beautiful 53 yard pass and run touchdown. Campbell up 21-0 with the momentum totally on the Cougar's side. This Campbell offense is explosive but don't think it's a one man show. Mckenna throws a real nice ball went 2 for 3 passing for 73 yards and a touchdown. Gouveia who plays corner on defense is his main target caught both passes. Wade's running mate is #43 Jordan Lang who also does a good job running between the tackles had 68 yards on 7 carries.

Campbell's next score was a 41 yard punt return by Wade. Friday night's game was the Jesiah Wade show the young junior scored from 52, 1, 41, 36, 65, and 16 a career high 6 touchdowns. What makes Wade special is his ability change speeds and accelerate. He is a very smooth running style that gives the appearance that is almost floating over the ground. He has an extra gear that he shows only when he needs to that enables him to get to the corner and separate from defenders. He is very accomplished on the basketball court and is able to use those same separation skills going by defenders.

I asked Jesiah which is his favorite sport football or basketball and he didn't hesitate "I love football, my goal is to hopefully play in college someday." Jesiah my guess you have a good shot in reaching your goal!

Brady was able to put one good drive together before halftime. Johnson completed a few passes and got the ball to the 1 where #30 Blake Whitcomb took it in for Brady's only score. To start the 2nd half It took Campbell only 3 plays to go 66 yards putting the game totally out of reach. The best way to describe Campbell's offense is explosive! They had 6 scoring drives in the game with a total of 13 plays! An average of 2 plays per drive, are you kidding me?! Those stats are off the chart!

As good as their offense is the defense goes unnoticed but they have a very solid core of defenders! Upfront you have #86 Lee Nordyke, #58 Christian Kamacho, #61 Jake Bumbaca, and #65 Patrica O'Mara. At linebacker #80 Vincent Bucci, #43 Jordan Lang, #54 Samuel Harvey, and #30 David Burke. The secondary includes #14 McKenna. #21 Gouveia, #25 Wade, and #26 Connor Perry.

Campbell has lived up to their preseason hype and is enjoying the comfort of playing in D6 but they will have a few challenges ahead with Franklin next week and what is turning out be the game of the year in D6 Newfound the last game of the regular season down in Litchfield. That should be a fun one with two teams who can score a lot of points and a match up of the 2 best running backs in the division Tyler Maviki of Newfound and Jesiah Wade.
