Franklin Wins Triple-OT Thriller

By: DC
In a win or go home end of the season match up between 2 rivals the Franklin Golden Tornadoes somehow found a way to come up with the big win over the Brady Giants 32-26.

Coach Greg Husband has coached a lot of big games at the newly named Roger S. Martin Field.

"This one will go down as one of the classics" said coach Husband. I am so proud of the boys on the way they were able to hang on and make the big plays when the game looked like it was slipping away."

A game that started very slowly with not a whole of action ended in a nail-biting triple-overtime game. In overtime the fans from both teams were standing and cheering their teams to somehow come up with the victory!

The first half saw very little offense with both teams playing it close to the vest and Brady coming away with a 3-0 lead.

At halftime the town of Franklin had a very touching ceremony and field dedication for a Franklin resident who went missing in action in the South Seas during World War II. There were representatives from all 3 branches of the services paying tribute to the young Martin when he was lost in battle November of 1942. Martin who played for the Tornadoes and was a member of the class of 1939. Martin's memory will be never forgotten with the naming of the schools football field in his honor.

Franklin finally got on the scoreboard on their second possession in the second half when #34 Kody Benwell ran it in from 5 yards out for the first of his 5 touchdowns and 125 yards rushing on the day. The drive was set up when #21 Brandon Butterworth got behind the Brady defense for a 49 yard catch and run. Franklin misses the extra point and goes up 6-3. Kody who was named the MVP of the game by the Knights of Columbus who sponsors the Franklin / Brady match up every year.

Kody is another one of those D-VI players who could play for any program in the state. He is muscle on top of muscle. When it comes to pick the Shrine team Kody has to be on the short list of D6 players who will be considered. He is more of a linebacker than a running back but when he carries the ball he will rattle your molars!

Brady who played their hearts out all game but were put in several tough situations trying to overcome a rash of penalties most coming while moving the ball deep in Franklin territory. On a 2nd and 39 Brady spark plug #22 sophomore Conor Harrison found a hole in the Franklin defense and went 66 yards for the touchdown. Brady takes the lead 10 to 6 with 8:25 to go in the game. Brady's next drive slowed by penalties but they were still able to get a 32 yard Brett Michaud field goal his second of the game.

With 2:55 to go in the game Brady seemed to be in the driver's seat when on a 3rd and 10 from their own 16 yard line Franklin's offensive coordinator Jeff Kaplan made the call of the year. A play that is called in every backyard pick up game the old hook and lateral. Franklin QB Bruce Carey finds Brandon Gagnon in the flat with the hook and Brandon turns and laterals with perfect timing to Benwell. Kody is down the sidelines outrunning everyone for the tying score 13-13.

"We have practiced that play all season and the kids complain that we never use it in the game" said Coach Husband. "Like sitting on a trump card it's all about timing. That was coach Kaplan's call and it came at the perfect time."

With the a packed hometown crown in a frenzy at the newly named Roger S. Martin field we are off to overtime.

Franklin wins the toss and starts on defense. Brady QB #11 Brendan Johnson throws a 3rd down 7 yard touchdown pass to #44 Evan Hall putting Brady up 20-13. Overtime for Franklin was all about Kody Benwell! He had 4 carries for 30 yards and all 3 overtime touchdowns. Both teams totally exhausted Benwell the incredible hulk was just to strong! It takes Benwell 2 carries to tie the game at 20-20.

The second overtime both teams traded scores and missed extra points. On to OT #3 where the Franklin defense came up with the big plays needed to win the game! On consecutive plays #58 Nathan Grevior and #57 Ian Jipson sack Brady QB Johnson which sets up a blocked field goal by Brandon Gagnon. It takes Benwell just one play to score and win this terrific game 32-26.

It's too bad that their had to be a loser. Coach Roberts team played with great character and should be very proud of their effort. When it is all said done isn't that what it's all about-VI

So we are off to the D-VI playoffs with Newfound traveling to the hottest team in the division Mascoma. The 2 vs. 3 match up should be a really good one with Campbell heading north to Franklin. Franklin won a very close battle earlier in the year when they battled back to beat Campbell who was in the drivers seat to pick up the road victory.
