Closing the Book on Class of 2012 - Girls Basketball

Continuing on with part 2 of 3 in our series, 'Closing the Book on Class of 2012'. Next up is girls basketball, which will be followed by boys basketball.

The recruiting rankings have been updated to reflect where each the state's top 25 prospects are now playing their college basketball. We'll take one last look back at this class before removing the rankings for this class from the site. After all, it's a high school sports site and all of these kids are in college now.

The story of this class is that 5 of the top 6 and 6 of the top 8 recruits on the list played AAU for the Rivals Basketball Club. They are Madeline Blais (Marist), Samantha Brenner (Vermont), Amra Elezovic (UMass Lowell), Melissa Frase (UMass Lowell), Kaley Marston (Brandeis) and Ashley Clough (RPI). Blais and Brenner are the only 2 Division I scholarship players from the class, and along with Marston they are also part of the original Lady Rivals elite squad back in 2010.

Blais in particular is one of the top girls basketball prospects to come out of NH in a long time. Girls who are 6-foot-1 simply aren't supposed to be able to shoot the basketball or slash to the rim like she can. Blais, Brenner and Frase (all pictured at top of page) were not only Rivals teammates but they were also teammates at New Hampton, where they played for a star-studded Huskies squad that featured 4 scholarship players (Massachusetts native and fellow Rival Lizzy Ball being the other).

In addition to Blais and Brenner, the other recruit on the list who is now playing Division I college basketball is Julia Winn at Liberty. Winn led Littleton High to the Division IV state title in 2012, as the Crusaders went unbeaten in league play. She is only 5-foot-4 and came from a tiny high school, but she made the team as a walk-on at Liberty - what a great story!

Jane White meanwhile led Souhegan High to back-to-back Division II state titles, and is already making an impact for a Bentley team that is the #2 ranked D-II college team in the country.

Two other local players who will be competing against White in the Northeast-10 Conference are Katie Stopera (Southern Connecticut State) and Lia Nawn (Merrimack). Meanwhile, Megan Hardiman (Slippery Rock) is also playing at the Division II level.

Speaking of AAU temmates, how about that NE Shooting Stars team? Nawn, Jane White, Cailey White (no relation), Rebecca Arnone and Ceara McNamara all played for that team in 2011. Additionally, Clough and Colleen Taylor both also played for that team in 2010 when they won the AAU D-II National Championship. Also on that team was Massachusetts natives Nicole Boudreau (now playing at Boston College) and Katie Vareika (recently committed to Dartmouth).

One other note - McNamara, Jane White and Forrest were all teammates on both of those Souhegan state title teams. New Hampton and Souhegan are the only schools with 3 players on this list.

Without any further ado, here are your final prospect rankings for NH girls basketball players from the Class of 2012. Best of luck to all of these girls at the next level!
