(Bedord, N.H.)-- Last night I witnessed more than a basketball game. Bishop Guetin’s 51-42 victory, at Bedford, was a testament of determination, heart and teamwork.
Jaime Sherburne (#10) a junior guard lead BG with 13 points, including some impressive drives to the basket as she weaved in and out of Bulldogs defenders. If Sherburne ever missed it seemed like senior Meghan Green (#44) was always there for the rebound. Green recorded 12 rebounds to go along with her 8 points for the evening.
This was the first high school game I’ve seen this season where both teams had an emphasis on defense. Some say the “offense wins games.” But, if you know how to slow down an opposing offense then defense can rule the day.
Only three players scored in double-digits: Jaime Sherburne (#10) and teammate Madison Gibbs for Bishop Guertin, also, Captain Maggie McGown (#3) Senior guard for the Bedford Bulldogs.
McGown showed tremendous effort trying to lead her team back late in the second half. I seemed to me, that anytime Bedford needed a spark “Captain Maggie” was there to light the fire. McGown had a team high 10 points.
I spoke with both coaches after the game and wished them well with their seasons. When I spoke with Coach Scott Hazelton for Bishop Guertin he said it was a “Good victory on the road…”
I acknowledged the great effort by some of his players including, senior forward, (#35) Nicole Hayner and sophomore guard, (#11) Megan Kerutis. The coached said, and I’m paraphrasing now, he was proud of the effort of everyone on the team.
Both the Bulldogs of Bedford and the Bishop Guertin Cardinals fought an excellent battle on the court Friday evening. I look forward to seeing some more of the teams as we all progress through the season.
