On Day 3 of the Nashua North Holiday Basketball Tournament Merrimack defeated Windham and Alvirne beat Campbell. Here is a recap of both games.
Merrimack beats Windham in Day 3 action at Nashua North Holiday Classic
Kaitlyn Petrocelli scored 14 points for the Merrimack Tomahawks as they beat the Jaguars from Windham 38-35.
Captain Kate Cole (#2) hit a three pointer to tie the game at 3 early after Windham’s Bri Angelini stole the ball for a hard lay-up and foul. Forward Maddie Freed for Merrimack (#13) played well in the paint early on often matching up with her numerical counterpart (#13) Clairee Putnam.
Putnam is a clear leader for the Jaguars. She continually called out “Watch screens” and other plays when guarding on defense. She kept her center of gravity low, focusing on the core of each would be scorer. She can’t guard everyone though.
Petrocelli is a clear mismatch. She is 6’1’ as a freshman! She is already talented and athletically dominant. I am sure she will be doing great things with that long frame of hers come NHIAA playoffs.
Senior Kelsey Schiebel had a solid game shooting for the Jaguars. The guard for Windham had a very intense gaze whenever she had the ball. Schiebel finished the game with 10 points and did her best down the stretch to pull the score even.
Time was not on Windham’s side and when Kaitlyn Petrocelli hit an easy lay-in off glass with just over a minute to play the Merrimack lead moved to 38-33. The Jags tacked on a late shot but it was too little too late. Both teams are (2-1) for the Tournament and are in a tough Pool A with Nashua North and Exeter.
Alvirne wins against the Campbell Cougars in Day 3 action
Brittany Lambert scored 23 point as the Alvirne Broncos went on to win 53-39 over the Campbell Cougars. At the start of the fourth quarter Alvirne held a slim 33-29 lead. Sandi Purcell, as usual, started pouring on the pressure both offensively and defensively.
Alvirne outscored the Cougars 20-10 in the final quarter. The junior Purcell finished with 13 points and was 4/6 from the free throw line. Teammate Veronica Moceri was 6/6 from the line accounting for 6 of her 14 points. Senior (#10) Leanne Winanas added 3 points to to go with some impressive defensive plays in the Broncos Victory.
The victory improved Alvirne’s record to (2-1) for the Nashua North Holiday Classic.
