Pinkerton Girls Make Big Statement

Astros Defeat Winnacunnet 67-38

By: Tuesday and Friday
I was looking forward to this game as I thought the winner would have a good start to possibly starting on the road to securing a Top 4 seed for the playoffs. It seems like Pinkerton was very much looking forward to this game. Pinkerton had a quick 8 - 0 start in the first period lead by Val Martin. The 5'10 sophomore scored with medium range shots and power drives to the hoop.

Pinkerton maintained their first period lead with pressure defense that forced the Warriors into turnovers. Pinkerton had a 14-4 lead at the end of the first. Martin had 8 to lead Pinkerton in the first quarter.

5'8" junior Colleen Fortier scored 9 in the 2nd quarter to lead Pinkerton. The tough as nails Fortier scored on put backs and hit 2 three's. Pinkerton's tenacious defense caused Winnacunnet all kinds of problems. Senior guard Sam Breslin was very impressive controlling the tempo for the Pinkerton offense and making one nifty assist after another to set up her mates. 6'1 junior Courtney Collins came off the bench to hit a couple of shots and gave some nice length to the Astros. Pinkerton took a 36-17 lead at halftime.

First year coach Cassie Turcotte must have said the right things at halftime to the beleaguered Lady Warriors because Winnacunnet came out with an aggressive full court press which forced Pinkerton into a string of turnovers. Winnacunnet cut the Pinkerton lead to 14 and had a golden opportunity to cut the lead to 12, but couldn't convert mid way through the 3rd quarter. This was the closest Winnacunnet would be for the rest of the game. Breslin and Martin took over from this point and helped increase the lead back up to over 20 by the end of the 3rd.

The 4th quarter saw both teams empty the benches as Pinkerton maintained a solid lead and built on it. 5'8 junior Kelly Dolan was solid in a losing cause for Winnacunnet as she scored 10 and was a force on the boards. The Lady Warriors definitely have some work to do if they are going to finish in the top 4 or even the top 8 and host a playoff game. On the reverse side it looks like Pinkerton has made a statement and will be heard in the same whispers as Londonderry, Bedford and North as teams trying to secure a Top 4 seed. Val Martin had 14 points and was strong for the whole game. She is certainly one to watch for All State honors. Sam Breslin was very impressive running the show for the Astros while scoring 10 points. She exudes senior leadership and has a high court IQ. She is fun to watch when she's setting up the rest of her team with her passing skills. Colleen Fortier scored 15 and is a glue girl who can score. The versatile Fortier can knock down outside shots, drive to the hoop with authority, plays good defense and oh by the way can rebound and get you a loose ball when you need it. Fortier did every thing. She might have been selling popcorn at halftime while helping the Pinkerton cheerleaders in their cheers. No word yet if she helped clean the gym after the game.

Winnacunnet looks to rebound by hosting a tough South squad next Tuesday while 3 - 0 Pinkerton visits 3-0 Alvirne in a big early season game next Tuesday also.
