(Salem, N.H.) – The ladies from Nashua North beat the Salem Blue Devil girls 75-63 in the season’s first Varsity Girls Division I matchup of the regular season.
Lead by guards Taylor Choate (#2) sophomore, Sara Cordova (#12) and an aggressive team defense, the lady Titans put up an impressive 75 points, in their opener Friday night at Salem.
With senior Sarah Amrein (#33) and junior Brittany DesRoche (#13) playing incredibly well in the paint, Nashua North had no problem overcoming an early seven point deficit. Fouls were taken and key shots made by both girls throughout the game.
Salem countered the experience of Nashua North with a youthful squad of Blue Devils. Captain Brenna Blakslee, (#5) a junior guard, was able to dash through the Titan defense for a team leading 19 points. She was followed closely by junior guards Amanda Bickford (#11) with 15 points and (#10) Emily Hickey, fellow guard, with 10 points.
The Blue Devils also used senior captain, Kelsey Perrault (#11) as both a key defender and outsider shooter. Second year coach, Anne Alosa has a great squad and I think she can look forward to very competitive season from her Varsity Girls.
I was in awe of the fundamentals of both teams. Sometimes, what doesn’t show up in the box score is just as crucial in big Division I games. Captain Genevieve Gosselin, senior guard (#24) had a knack for making keys plays were her team needed it most. With a modest 8 points, it was the fundamentals of the young Titan that drew my attention.
Coach Ricky Oliver said to me after the game, “We need to stay in our framework,” when asked how his team can improve moving forward. The Titan coach was very vocal on his sideline, helping his girls through all four periods.
From speaking with some parents during the game it is clear to me both teams have excellent support structures in place at home and at school. From the Athletic Directors, to the parents, all the way down to the young couple helping record the game for friends and family; I am sure we are all in for an excellent Division I Basketball Season.
