When Scott Hazelton stepped down as head coach of the Bishop Guertin girls basketball team to accept an assistant coaching position with UMass Lowell women's basketball, it set in motion a domino effect of coaching changes. The latest domino in this coaching carousel has now come to light.
Former Souhegan High girls basketball coach Jeremy Faulkner took over for Hazelton at BG, and Mike Heaney takes over for Faulkner after coaching the Souhegan boys team for the past 5 years. And now the domino effect has continued, with Pete Pierce recently being hired as Heaney's replacement at Souhegan
"Con-Val's Pete Pierce takes over at Souhegan" said Mike Boehm, who has served as the program's JV coach and varsity assistant for the past several years. "Mike Facques, the back-to-back state champion coach at SHS in 2003 and 2004 pursued and applied for the job but was passed over in favor of Pierce. I will remain as Pete's JV coach and varsity assistant."
The Souhegan boys basketball team has made the D-II Final Four in 2 of the past 3 years, including a title game appearance in 2013. However the Sabers graduate 9 players off last year's team, including star point guard Brandon Len, big man Jake Kennedy, athletic guard Tyler Ford and sharpshooter Zach Simmonds.
"I think our team can surprise some people next year and Pete is the right man for the job" Boehm commented.
Con-Val fell short of the D-II playoffs in both seasons with Pierce at the helm.
