Bedford Mauls Goffstown 50-0 #BlowoutCity

By: Jeremy Leveille
Bedford showed why they are one of, if not the best team in the state of NH by crushing Goffstown 50-0 at home on Saturday afternoon. It was the fourth consecutive shutout for the Bulldogs' defense, as Bedford has outscored their opponents 160-0 over the past 4 games. That is a mind boggling stat!

"Our team has great unity and camaraderie, we're like a family" said senior WR/DB Nick Vailas. "We need to just keep moving forward and not get complacent."

In Saturday's game, Bedford started off slow but towards the end of the 1st and into the 2nd quarter began hitting on all cylinders. Senior QB Dan Colella threw for 141 yards and 1 TD, while also rushing for 42 yards and 2 touchdowns. Nick Vailas caught 3 passes for 42 yards and 1 TD, as well as intercepting 2 passes on defense. His cousin Mike Vailas caught 3 passes for 38 yards, had 34 rushing yards and also had a 51 yard punt return which nearly went for a touchdown. Bedford led 28-0 at halftime, and kept pouring it on in the 2nd half. Most of the 2nd half was running time, and Bedford sat their starters for most of the 4th quarter once they went up 43-0.

Not only was it homecoming for Bedford, but Bulldogs head coach Kurt Hines was coaching against his son Brockton Hines who starts at defensive end for Goffstown.

"Having to coach against him, it was the most bittersweet win ever" said Coach Hines. "He played well and we won, that's what I prayed for. After the game I told him I'm proud of him and I love him."

Coach Hines also mentioned he was frustrated that his team left 7 points on the board on their first drive. Mike Vailas ran in for a 6 yard touchdown but it was called back due to a holding penalty on Bedford. That brought it back to the 19 yard line. On 3rd and goal from the 18 Colella's pass to the end zone for Nick Vailas fell incomplete. Keelan McCoole came in to attempt a 35 yard field goal but it was no good.

Late 1st quarter is when the Bulldogs would finally get on the board. Colella hit Marco Santini (3 catches for 61 yards) for a 19 yard completion. Mike Vailas picked up 8 yards on the ground, but then Colella was sacked by Goffstown junior Samuel Shearin. Colella made a good run up the middle, picking up 15 yards. After a good hit by Gofftown's Ian Routhier, Colella rushed for another 12 yards and then snuck it in for the TD from 2 yards out. Bedford breaks the scoreless tie, goes up 6-0 with 1:27 left in the 1st quarter after the extra point was no good.

Meanwhile the Bulldogs just kept playing great defense. Junior Ryan Belz is only 175 lbs., but he is a beast of a defensive end. Belz absolutely drilled Goffstown RB Connor Bourque, then later he sacked Grizzlies QB Casey Gervais (who shared playing time at QB with Matt Collins). Then DL Eric Glassman (both he and Belz are only juniors) rushed the passer, forcing Gervais to hurry his throw. The long pass down field was intercepted by Nick Vailas for his first pick of the day.

Bedford ball on their own 44 yard line. Brockton Hines makes a good hit, sacking Colella. Colella got right back up though and connected with Nick Vailas for a 9 yard pass play. Bedford punts, Goffstown gets the ball back and puts Collins in at QB. He hits Paul Teixeira for a 17 yard gain. Again though, the Bulldogs defense steps up. Thomas O'Rourke (also only a junior) and senior captain Aaron Palys made some good hits, then Colin Cashin (another junior) makes an outstanding tackle for a loss. Goffstown punts it away.

Bedford would then score 3 touchdowns in the last 6 minutes of the 1st half to go up 28-0 at halftime. On the first drive Palys ran for 13 yards, then it was Colella to Santini for a 29 yard pickup. Colella caps the drive with a 12 yard TD pass to Nick Vailas. The 2 point conversion is good, as 6'2, 250 lbs. senior Andrew Biederman ploughed his way into the end zone. Bedford now leads 14-0 with 5:39 left in the 2nd quarter.

"Dan had some big shoes to fill with 'Cap', but he's doing really well" said Nick Vailas, referring to the team's former QB James Caparell (now redshirting at Rhode Island along with WR Brian Collins).

Goffstown fumbles on their next drive, and it's recovered by senior captain Matt Howe. Bedford gets to start their ensuing possession on the Goffstown 23 yard line, and Michael Collins (yes, another junior) dashes to the end zone for the 23 yard score. 21-0 Bedford, 5:16 to play in the 2nd quarter.

Gervais goes back in at QB for Goffstown, but he throws a bomb downfield which falls incomplete. Another punt Goffstown. On Bedford's next drive it's Colella to Mike Vailas for a 4 yard gain. Vailas fumbles, but it's recovered by the Bulldogs. After a good hit by Grizzlies senior Ben Genest it's 3rd and 14 for Bedford on their own 41 and Colella finds Mike Vailas for a 21 yard pass play and a 1st down. Most of it was yards after the catch (YAC) with Vailas breaking some tackles along the way. Then it's Colella to Santini for q3 yards, then he connects with Nick Vailas for a 21 yard completion to the 1 yard line. Colella keeps it from the 1 for his 2nd TD run f the game, and it's 28-0 Bedford with 1:33 left in the 2nd quarter.

On Goffstown's next dive Glassman made a strong tackle and Nick Vailas made his 2nd INT of the game, this time on his own 1 yard line to prevent a TD. At the half it's 28-0 Bulldogs.

Bedford ball to start the 2nd half. Colella to Mike Vailas for 13 yards. Holding is then called on the Bulldogs which brings it back to their own 45, but then Palys runs in the 55 yard TD down the left sideline and it's 35-0 Bedford with 912 left in the 3rd quarter. Good blocking up front, and a great run by Palys.

Later in the 3rd Goffstown fumbles, and Robert Heald tackles a Goffstown player in the end zone for a safety. It's now 37-0 Bedford with 1:23 left 3rd quarter - the rout continues. On the ensuing punt, Mike Vailas with a big return from his own 45 all the way to the Goffstown 5 yard line. Then it's Collin Cashin with a 5 yard TD run and it's 43-0 Bedford with 11:52 left 3rd quarter. The backups are now in for the Bulldogs, and we already had running time.

Thomas Lemay adds the last score for Bedford later on with a 4 yard TD run with 1:03 left to play to account for the 50-0 final score.
