Pelham Runs Over Winnisquam

By: Ross Laorenza
The Pelham Pythons improve to 4-0 after an impressive 42-0 tromping of the Winnisquam Bears. They look to be the favorite this year in Division-III.

Pelham got the scoring started with a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior Joe Slattery (#3) to fellow senior Zack Conway (#88). But the story here was the Python’s running game. Led by seniors Chris Medeiros (#8) and Chris Benjamin (#21), Pelham scored 5 rushing touchdowns in the game.

With the score still 7-0 in the first quarter, Medeiros gashed the Winnisquam defense for a 44-yard touchdown. Benjamin scored later from 9-yards out to make the score 21-0.

The Python’s defense forced the first of three turnovers early in the second with Winnisquam driving. Tyler Kosik (#59) recovered a fumble and returned it to his own 28 yard line. That started an 8 play, 72 yard drive ending with a 2-yard plunge from junior Nick Johnson (#44). At the half Pelham lead 28-0.

Winnisquam received the second half kickoff, but after a few plays it seemed they were moving in the wrong direction. Two penalties and a bad snap had them looking at 2nd and 40 from their own 25 yard line. On the next play Pelham was flagged for an illegal hit to the head of quarterback Greg Hunt (#10). Hunt the completed a pass out to his left to Christian Serrano, bringing up a manageable 3rd and 12. But, Hunt’s intended pass was intercepted by Joe Slattery.

Six plays later Chris Medeiros would add his second rushing touchdown of the day. He made a great move, spinning away from two would-be tacklers and scampered in from 19 yards out. Pelham now leads 35-0. On their next possession it was Chris Benjamin’s turn to reach the endzone. He ran 44 yards to paydirt and put the finishing touches on this impressive win for the Pythons. Final score Pelham: 42, Winnisquam: 0.

Looking ahead the Pythons play next at Epping-New Market and Winnisquam will host Franklin.
