Big First Quarter Lifts Salem Over Alvirne

By: Ross Laorenza
It was senior night inside the Davis Gymnasium as Salem honored Mike Felix and Brent Barrett with a nice ceremony before tip off. The Blue Devils got off to an amazing start in the first quarter. Jared Gott scored the first 7 points of the game in what would amount to a 20-0 run to start the game. Alvirne didn’t score their first points until 6:30 in the second quarter. The Devil’s defense held the Broncos in check early on forcing a number of band shots down low.

After their shaky start Alvirne gained some footing in the second quarter. Alex Wetmore, Sam Bonney-Liles, and Danny Brown slowly pulled their team back into the game. Brown had an impressive drive to the basket getting the bucket and one to cut the lead to 12 with just over four minutes to play in the half. Tyler Brown hit back to back shots followed by two free throws from George Notini to close out the half. Salem was outscored 21-10 in the quarter. At the half the Blue Devils lead 28-21.

Mike Felix was a key part of the Blue Devil’s offense in the second half. Six of his fifteen points came in the third quarter as Salem tried to outpace the Broncos. He is very effective at running Salem’s offense and is stellar on defense as well. By the end of the third Alvirne had cut Salem’s lead down to three point (41-38).

Salem would get to the line a ton in the fourth quarter making 17 of 20 shots the sealed the game. The Broncos came close to pulling off the comeback, but great shooting by Felix and Gott closed this one out for the Blue Devils. Final score: Salem 59, Alvirne 47.
