Goffstown Over Winnacunnet in a Wild One

Winnacunnet led Goffstown 21-0 after 1 quarter of play and they led 27-19 after 3. But in the 4th quarter Goffstown notched 3 interceptions on defense and exploded for 5 touchdowns. It went from 27-19 Winnacunnet after 3, to Goffstown leading 50-27 with 1:09 left in the 4th. Juniors Casey Gervais and Connor Bourque both had huge games, and the Grizzlies improve to 3-2 on the season with a 50-34 win on Saturday.

"Gervais is a good football player, we try to put him in a good position to make plays" said Goffstown head coach Justin Huft. "Connor Bourque is an exceptional football player who makes plays. We're fortunate to have him on our side. Christian Marquis had a big game. He ran hard and had two key interceptions."

Gervais was 11/15 passing for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus he rushed for 212 yards and 3 more TDs. Bourque rushed for 104 yards and 1 TD, plus 5 receptions for 165 yards and 2 TDs. Marquis intercepted 2 passes, plus rushed for 61 yards and 1 TD and caught a 32 yard pass.

The 4th quarter fun for Goffstown got started when Gervais connected with senior WR Paul Teixiera for a 6 yard TD pass. Initially Goffstown went for a field goal, as Sam Heidenreich kicked it through from 29 yards out. But Winnacunnet was called for a personal foul, so the 3 points were taken off the board and instead the Grizzlies got 1st and goal from the 6. The Warriors were now clinging to a 27-25 lead with 9:56 left in the 4th quarter.

On Winnacunnet's ensuing possession, sophomore QB Liam Viviano (playing his first varsity game at QB) threw a wobbly pass down field. Marquis made the interception and returned it to the Warriors' 25 yard line. Marquis ran in the touchdown from 21 yards out and Goffstown takes their first lead of the game, 31-27 with 8:29 left in the 4th.

Winnacunnet ball, and Bobby Brown breaks loose for a 17 yard run. But then Christian Melanson makes a big hit on 'D' and Winnacunnet is forced to punt. Goffstown retains possession, and Marquis runs for a 25 yard gain (good block on the play by Bourque). Christian LaRosa makes a nice tackle for the Warriors, resulting in a 5 yard loss. Then on 3rd and 13 from their own 48 yard line, Gervais hits Bourque with a quick screen pass. Bourque spins off a tackle and sprints 52 yards down the left sideline for the touchdown. Goffstown now leads 37-27 with 5:20 left in regulation.

After another interception by the Goffstown defense (this one by Teixiera), the Grizzlies get the ball right back. Gervais then runs for a 64 yard TD, thanks in large part to a great block by Tim Comeau. The cycle continued to repeat, as Viviano threw another INT on the Warriors' next drive (another pick by Marquis). The Grizzlies capitalized on the turnover, and Bourque broke off a 73 yard TD run. Bourque is a threat to score a TD every time he touches the football. He may be undersized but he is tough, elusive and is one of the fastest kids in the state. It was now 50-27 Goffstown with 1:09 left in the 4th quarter. Winnacunnet led 21-0 after 1, but since that time it was 50-6 Grizzlies. It was the 5th TD of the 4th quarter for Goffstown.

Give Winnacunnet credit though, because they kept on fighting till the end. Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the touchdown. That cut the Goffstown lead to 50-34 with 56.8 seconds remaining. Gervais comes back out, takes a knee and that's game.

Goffstown certainly dominated the 4th quarter, but this game didn't start off well for them at all. Goffstown shot themselves in the foot early on with turnovers and penalties. Winnacunnet capitalized on them, and took a 21-0 lead after 1. Winnacunnet punted on their first drive of the game, but Goffstown was whistled for a roughing the kicker penalty. That gave the Warriors the ball back, 1st and 10 on the Goffstown 42. The Grizzlies then got called for off sides. LaRosa ran for a 15 yard gain, setting up 1st and goal on the Goffstown 1 yard line. From there Viviano dove into the end zone for the score. The PAT was blocked, and it's 6-0 Warriors with 4:45 left in the 1st quarter.

The ensuing kickoff was a short, bouncing kick. Goffstown fumbled while attempting to dive on the ball, and it was recovered by Winnacunnet's Jon Carrigan. So now Winnacunnet has great field position, on the Goffstown 32 yard line. Viviano runs for an 11 yard gain, and at the end of the play he gets hit by a Goffstown defender out of bounds. The Grizzlies are called for a late hit, resulting in a 15 yard penalty which brings up 1st and goal for Winnacunnet on the Goffstown 10 yard line. Mike Lewis (only a junior and played a strong game on both sides of the ball) runs in the touchdown from 2 yards out. The PAT is good by Anthony Primavera and it's 13-0 Warriors, 3:40 left in the 1st quarter.

Goffstown ball, and their early mistakes continue. Gervais faked the handoff, kept it himself and ran it up the middle (a play that worked for big gains at least 6 times on the day) for a short gain but he got hit and fumbled the ball. Jake Smith recovers for Winnacunnet. Lewis runs for a short gain, but then Goffstown is whistled for another late hit penalty. Viviano connected with Jordan Keene for what appeared to possibly be a 25 yard TD pass but the officials ruled that Keene caught the ball out of bounds. Then on 4th down and 8 from the Goffstown 24 yard line, Viviano hits LaRosa on a screen pass, 18 yard gain and 1st down. That set up 1st and goal on the Goffstown 6 yard line. Viviano then scrambles out of the pocket, rolls right and throws the ball on the run to Brown for a 6 yard TD pass. Viviano then connects with a wide open Dan Fields for the 2 point conversion. 21-0 Warriors after 1 quarter of play.

That's when Goffstown was able to regroup and begin their comeback. Gervais ran for a 24 yard gain, followed by a 12 yard run before capping the drive with a 14 yard TD run. They kept running the fake hand off, QB keeper play and it kept working. Now it's 21-7 Winnacunnet with 10:52 left in the 2nd quarter.

Lewis returns the ensuing kickoff, and gets absolutely leveled by Bourque. That smallest player on the field made the biggest hit of the game. Bourque is a tough kid, no question. Winnacunnet then goes for a faked punt on 4th and 3 from their own 35, but Primavera loses a yard on the run, resulting in a turnover on downs and great field position for Goffstown.

Bourque runs for a 10 yard gain, and then Gervais runs in the 15 yard TD. The PAT was no good, and it's 21-13 Grizzlies with 8:32 left in the 2nd quarter.

On Goffstown's next drive they start out way back on their own 12. Gervais makes a terrific throw and Marquis makes a great leaping grab for a 32 yard completion. But then Bourque fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Gabe Paster for Winnacunnet. But then Melanson sacks Viviano on 3rd and 9 from his own 34 yard line and the Warriors are forced to punt it right back.

Goffstown punts it right back on their next drive, as Cody Pierce made a big play on 'D' with a sack of Gervais on 3rd and 4 from his own 41. Winnacunnt ball now, but Peyton Bickford makes a nice tackle and we head to halftime with Winnacunnet leading 21-13.

Warriors ball to start the 2nd half. Cameron Bond makes a good tackle and they're forced to punt. Goffstown possession now, and Gervais completes a screen pass to Bourque. Bourque then sprints 75 yards for the TD. The Grizzlies go for the 2 point conversion which would tie the game, but Smith makes a good tackle for Winnacunnet and the attempt is no good. 21-19, Warriors clinging to the lead with 9:22 left in the 3rd quarter.

On the Grizzlies' next drive Gervais hits Matt Collins for an 11 yard pass play. Then Gervais picks up 26 yards on a keeper. But then on 4th and 1 from the WHS 31 yard line Gervais keeps it but is stopped for no gain and turnover on downs. LaRosa was in on the hit.

Winnacunnet ball, and Viviano completes a 23 yard pass to Carrigan. Brown picks up 8 yards on the ground for a 1st down, and Lewis caps the drive with a 27 yard TD run. The PAT was no good, and Winnacunnet leads 27-19 with 1:20 left in the 3rd quarter. That's when the 4th quarter fun began for the Grizzlies.
